How to Turn on Magic Chef Gas Oven

Many RVs come with Magic Chef ovens, which have a reputation for being fussy.  Through the years one of the most common problems RV owners experience is one day the stovetop and oven is working fine and the next day the oven won't light at all. This is exactly what happened to us with the Magic Chef oven in our first RV, a 2007 Arctic Fox fifth wheel. Not knowing any better we called a repairman to make use of our RV warranty but it turned out to be a waste of time. Here's why:

Magic Chef RV ovens can be fussy.

3 Things to Do If Your Magic Chef Oven Won't Light

Step 1: Clean the Pilot Assembly

Disassemble and clean out the pilot assembly with steel wool. Be careful not to lose the one small part that falls out when you unscrew the nut! Make sure the screw is tight – the pilot will be erratic if the screw is not tight enough. If your oven doesn't light, move on to the next step.

Step 2: Adjust the Pilot Flame Size

Magic Chef ovens have a tiny little screw on the front of the thermostat assembly, behind the knob. This is a gas adjustment for the pilot. Loosen it with a screwdriver to increase the pilot flame size.

If your Magic Chef Oven won't light after Step 2, go on to the final step before calling a repair shop:

Step 3: Unkink the Supply Line

Originally we thought the reason our own Magic Chef oven was having problems was because the pilot flame was improperly adjusted. Step 2 worked for a while but later we discovered the the real reason why our Magic Chef oven was being fussy was because the copper supply lines behind the stove got bent during installation at the factory.

To see if kinked supply lines are your problem too, try pulling the oven out just enough to access the supply line and straighten any kinks out. You may find like we did that a pinched line is restricting gas flow to the oven's pilot.

If none of these three steps will fix your Magic Chef oven, then it's probably time to call a repair person. Before doing so you might want to check out the many tips and ideas that other RVers have shared when their own Magic Chef oven wouldn't light.
